This website is designed to keep students, industry partners and other interested individuals informed on student design activities at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology and Department of BioEngineering.

The course “Rehabilitation Engineering Design” is part of the core curriculum for Graduate students in the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology (RST). The “Introduction to Rehabilitation Engineering Design” (HRS2706) is taught in the Fall and the follow-up course “Rehabilitation Engineering Design” (HRS/BioEng2703)is taught in the Spring semester and is cross-listed at the Dept. of BioEngineering and at Carnegie Mellon University.

The course is designed for rehabilitation professionals with either technical or non-technical backgrounds. The design content focuses on user centered design of products and systems for the elderly and people with disabilities. Over the course of the terms, students will develop a design plan and demonstrate the feasibility of a product to meet the needs of their target population. Implementation of the plan, including designing, fabricating and evaluating prototypes, will take place in the second part of the course sequence offered in the spring term.

For additional information, please email the course instructors or read the syllabus.
